A teacher opens a Snaps story, and the children step into the Great North Forest. Here are Boo, Beck, Fex and Vel. Four small friends, with two tails each and plenty of questions. They collect the stories of the forest. And today, a story is waiting to be found.
Vel finds a book on the path outside their home. But whose book is it? The children look at the pictures. They notice the book, follow the friends and begin to guess. Then the Snaps meet Griselda, the hedgehog librarian. Is it your book? A few simple words, with a real reason to use them.
It is her book. And she has something to share. The friends go inside, settle down and listen to a story about a mouse. By the end, they all want the same thing. One more story, please!
Back in the classroom, the teacher reads with the children. They listen, point and join in with familiar lines. Then they try the conversation with a partner. A book, a pencil, a bag. Is it your book? Yes! Thank you. English helps them ask a question, answer a friend and do something together.
Now the children have ideas of their own. What would they do if they found a book? They can draw a place for a story, label their picture and tell a partner about it. They rehearse a sentence together, then try writing it. The story has become something they can make their own.
Some children begin with a picture and a few words. Others are ready to read a little more. They still meet the same friends and follow the same adventure, with something to contribute when the class comes together. And when useful words return in another story, there is something familiar to build on.
Across the year, twelve story units take the children further into the forest, and further into English. The stories connect with practice pages, songs and chants, sound work, and things to say, read, write and make. The teacher has a clear sequence to work from, with audio, classroom resources and small checks on learning. There is room to follow the children's ideas, with the next step ready when they need it.

A clear teaching sequence keeps the story at the centre. Each step gives children something small and meaningful to do.
5 minutes · Look and predict
Show the first panel. Find a tree, a home and a book. Accept pointing or words in any language, then model the English. Let children guess who owns the book.
